1. Why did Dr Jekyll believe that human beings can never be happy?

In essence, Jekyll believes that man lives a life of self-repression, held down by societal expectations that do not allow for deviance or deviate behaviors. His "addiction" to Hyde begins when he can give into his base desires under Hyde's persona.
