Faustus was a "master" in the subject of Christian theology and the Old Testament. Faust, however, rejects religion because limits the power a human can attain. In religion, a mere mortal must always be subordinate to the power of God. Hunger for metaphysical power and control is very much a reason that Faust departs from Godly study to bargain with the Devil.
