Doctor Faustus (Marlowe)

How does Mephastophilis threatens to arrest Faustus' soul for treason and rend it, and to whom did faustus appeal for mercy.

What makes this so ironic?

Faustus says he wants to repent. Mephastophilis calls him a traitor and threaten to β€œin piecemeal tear thy flesh,” He woulhave appealed to God for mercy.
