I think that this is very much a classical idea of myth philosophy at the time. THe rejection of divinity for sinful pleasures were and possibly are still a common myth subject. Faust becomes a mixture of Old Testament doctrine, ideas of Greek tragedy and Elizabethan morality. This is all the stuff that makes a great mythic story.
