Certainly ideas of the Renaissance play heavily in the story. Heaven and hell, redemption, and the struggle that man faces from temptation. The Seven Deadly Sins, damnation, as well as ultimate salvation are cornerstones of the play. It is a play in which heaven struggles for the soul of a Renaissance Everyman: in this case Doctor Faustus.
