Pain and its effect on someone’s life

One of the major themes in the poems is the way pain affects someone’s life. The narrator describes the pain and the traumatic events in his life that end up causing him a great deal of pain and the internal pain has an effect to some extent to the outside world as well. The narrator describes the natural environment surrounding him and how it seems to metamorphose into something cold and hard to deal with. The pain is described as changing one’s perspective about the world in general and thus through his poems the narrator wanted to highlight just how dangerous it can be.

The beauty of nature and how it can have a healing effect

In some of the poems, nature is given a healing quality and is linked to the ideas of growth and rebirth. The male characters mentioned in the poem who suffer loss find solace in nature and eventually are even healed by it. While autumn and winter are linked with negative emotions, summer and spring are presented in a positive way and as having a positive effect on the people who suffer. Thus, the healing power of nature is presented here as a major theme.

Life without love

Another common theme in the poem is how life is without love. The narrator suffers because he loses many important people in his life and some end up leaving him while others die. These events affect the narrator on a profound level and he suffers because he is no longer able to spend time with them. The narrator focuses on the pain he feels and also describes how this pain affects his everyday life and his perception of life.
