why does the poet refer to death as poor death?

Die not,poor death,nor yet can'st thou kill me.

The poet refers to death as "poor Death" because Death does not in fact have the power to kill. Christians firmly believe that death leads to eternal life.... thus, Death does not have the power to take life, but rather move us onto the next.
