Consider the opening pages when Yura is forced to strike out on his own. The metaphor is of a wolf over his mother's grave. I think Russia is full of snow in winter to begin with. If you are looking for a metaphor in that, we might consider the longing between Yura'a love for two women. He is stuck in it like a long winter that won't end.
