No, in this autobiographical poem, Heaney is speaking to his memories..... the way his father digging in the garden brings back memories of his grandfather doing the same. Heaney makes special note of the fact his pen is his spade.... that he will be remembered by his by his words in the same way they are remembered by their actions.
