Desiree's Baby

Question

Why is it significant to the story to understand that Armand’s mother died early, and that his father married her out of the United States? How could this function as a foreshadowing device?

This is significant because Armand knows nothing about his mother, and his father's marriage would not have been viewed as questionable in Paris.
