Armand is the epitome of what we expect a wealthy landowner to be. He is stuffy, priviledged, and selfish. He judges his life according to the number of his possessions.... he's all about appearances. Armand fell in his beautiful wife at first sight. She too was a belonging. When their son was born, his affections began to dwindle..... his wife wasn't perfect.... she was of mixed race.
