Desiree’s Baby

What is the author’s most likely purpose for introducing the story through Madame Valmonde’s point of view?

I think the author was looking for a sense of objectivity within the context of the American South. She seems a reliable narrator and is sympathetic enough to eventually invite Desiree and the baby to live with her at Valmonde.
