Democracy in America

why did Tocqueville write Democracy in America

I am under the impression he wrote it to promote his reputation to help him advance in the administration of France, not for just fame from the book

Your impression is not incorrect altogether, but I think the main reason Tocqueville wrote this book was to provide a coherent analysis of a functioning democracy for his audience in France. There were more than a few failed attempts at democracy in his native country, and Tocqueville was interested in providing a legitimately democratic alternative.
