The teachers also came from the upper castes. Though they were expected to treat all the students equal, they did not really do so. On the contrary, he tried his best to discourage the low caste students from attending the school. When the headmaster Kaliram grabbed the narrator from his neck and forced him to sweep the schoolrooms and the ground, no teacher raised his voice in favour of the narrator. They watched the whole show. Even when the narrator's father saw his son sweeping the ground and complained to the headmaster, he was also called names and insulted. As all the other teachers watched the whole show silently, they seemed to agree with the headmaster. None of them tried to stop the headmaster. Therefore they fell short of the ideal image of the guru, who is supposed to treat all students as equal.
