I think Charlie's role is to really illustrate everything that Willy could have been. As we get to know Charley we also see Willy's flaws illuminated. Charley is a good businessman, exemplifying the success that Willy is unable to achieve. Although Willy claims that Charley is a man who is "liked, but not well-liked," he owns his own business and is respected and admired. Willy is a failure in everything hat Charlie is successful at.
