Willy wanted his sons to be successful men. He was unhappy with his own life, but he was happiest when he was useful..... when he worked at a job he was good at. When Willy began his career he was one of the best at his job. Unfortunately, the job itself changed over the course of time, and Willy couldn't or wouldn't adapt to the changes.
