SJ and her parents collectively represent the role of allies in the fight against injustice. Unlike Jared and his friends, they do not claim not to see Justyce’s race; they acknowledge the way his life is different from theirs because of the color of his skin. They personally do not treat him any differently, but they provide understanding and additional support, especially by giving him a platform and an understanding ear when he needs to speak out. SJ defends Justyce and wider social justice causes in class, then apologizes later for taking over the conversation even though at the time Justyce did not feel emotionally prepared to speak in class. They see Justyce as a passionate intelligent young man with a deep-rooted longing for justice, as his name suggests.
