Keating provokes defiance in his students without providing social discourse (something to try and change) for true change. What is the effect of this when the students act on their defiance?

( Mr. Keating's meeting with Nolan to Knox's talk with Chris-- approx. 19 minutes leff )

The boys are punished by the very constricting school. Welton Academy is built on social and intellectual conformity. Thinking outside the box is perceived as a threat by the school, which is funded privately by parents.
