In my opinion, Neil's suicide was caused by his own inability to accept himself. He provided immense support for his classmates, but he never allowed the real Neil to shine through. He was always trying to be someone else, and in the end, he realized that he couldn't live up to his own expectations. You can only play so many roles before you don't know who you are anymore..... before you lose yourself. Neil lost himself.
