What has cyrano done to lignieres assassins,and how does this indirectly characterize cyrano?

He fights them. There are a hundred of them, sent to kill his friend Ligniere, for simply offending DeGuiche with a song. Cyrano chooses to defend his friend, and kills seven or eight of the assassins, then appraently the rest give up their attempt to kill Ligniere. I'll leave it to you to figure out what that says about his character.
