Cue for Treason

Of course there was a reason why the author always fell back on the old trick ... Shakespeare frequently disguised a female character as a boy in his later plots. Why was this a very practical device for playwrights to use in these times ?

Shakespeare used "gender-bending" a lot. It allowed him to complicate the plot primarily in his comedies. Characters misinterpret and misread each other. The Elizabethan crowed really enjoyed this sort of thing.
