Soldiers say that dawn is a dangerous time. I have heard that from men who have fought in Ireland and the Low Countries and in the steaming forests of the Spanish Main. It’s the time when sentries get slack and their eye¬ lids droop, and a wise enemy chooses his moment to launch a surprise attack.
