How does Paton vividly convey Stephen Kumalo's departure from Ndotsheni to Johannesburg?

Paton uses descriptive imagery to convey Stephen's disillusionment, fear, and consternation. He is a calm man.... almost resigned. Stephen's worry is evident, he feels for his family, but the further he travels from his village, the more of an outsider he becomes in his own country.
