This is a free ebook of Daniel Defoe's novel The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. While reading this novel is certainly not necessary in order to enjoy Bishop's adaptation—indeed, Bishop's poem takes notable liberties with its source material—reading at least a segment of the original text is one way to understand Bishop's project in this poem, and in particular to understand her decisions about how to depict the voice of her speaker.
