The title of the story has led many to speculate on what the “white elephant” symbolizes for the couple. A white elephant is generally thought of as unusual and cumbersome, in short, a problem..... something no one wants. In context, the "whate elephants" symbolize Jig's unborn child.

The tracks of the railroad, which lay side by side, serve as a symbol of the separate paths that will be taken by Jig and the American.
