Cold Sassy Tree

What is Miss Love Simpson's purpose for being in the book Cold Sassy Tree?

Love Simpson, we see a character that is truly a "fish out of water." Her views on equality, racism, and societal roles clash with Cold Sassy's Southern post-Civil War mentality. If no one likes her (outside of Will and his Grandpa) and her views are seen as ignorant, snobbish, and useless, then what is her ultimate purpose in the novel?

The character of Miss Simpson is important to the text because she shows strength of character and rises above the haughty, self-absorbed people around her. The story of her life..... her past..... in addition to her strength of character, illustrates that truth CAN set you free.
