That Sunday, December 7, 1941, Ned’s social studies teacher, Mr. Straight, overheard Ned greeting his friends in Navajo. Ned was forced to stand in front of the classroom with a duncecap on. This was a "normal" punishment for anything having to do with Navajo culture.
