How do the postwar jobs reveal the ways that the war has affected the lives of people like him?

Although the war has ended, certain jobs are no longer available, leaving people without income, thus, unable to care for their families. Prior to the war, Jonathan made a good living in the coal mines, but the mines remain closed, and he must find alternative sources of money. This forces Jonathan to be innovative...... to make use of what he has at his disposal for income. Thus, he uses his bicycle to start a taxi service, he opens a bar that caters to soldiers, and his family gathers fruit and makes food to sell.
