Orson Wells and his cinematographer, Greg Toland, used various innovative camera lenses and focus to convey meaning. Citizen Kane, at times, looks small in comparison to the sets and at other times, looks large. Toland used deep focus photography to give a more theatrical look to the shots where the foreground, midground, and background are all in focus.
