Adeline is shunned by her family because they blame her for their mother's death. Her affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck, and life does not get any easier when her father remarries. In addition to her struggles to be accepted, Adeline is also a girl. During the period in which the story takes place, the birth of a daughter was not often celebrated, and families dealt with unwanted daughters in a number of ways. Unwanted daughters were often abandoned outdoors to die; others were shipped off to the orphanage; some were sold; and others, like Adeline, suffered from a lifetime of emotional and physical abuse.
