The physical environment really doesn't play a huge part in this story other than proximity to school and relatives. On the other hand the social environment is very important. Adeline's family considers her bad luck. Her mistreatment is masked underneath social customs and "beliefs". Adeline's harsh social environment gives her little chance to realize love and her potential.
