At the beginning of Chapter 5, why does Sundara think eating lunch with Jonathan was okay even though it went against her Cambodian customs?

It was in the beginning when Sundara was going to eat with jonathan.

Sundara wished to avoid conflict and fit in... she doesn't want to be ridiculed, in addition to the fact that she has a crush on Jonathan.
