In PD James's uncomfortably relatable dystopia, the planet looks like a grey wasteland. The natural environment looks like it's in intensive care fighting a cancer that needs to be destroyed. Unfortunately, the cancer is us and the first order of business is to remove humanity from the equation. There is a shade of hope in the form of a pregnant female. The race and subsequent status of the pregnant woman was a clever alteration from the book. The woman in question is a black woman who holds the secrets and hope for the salvation of the human race. The aesthetic of the film shows an inevitable fate of the world when men are in charge. It is ultimately women who serve as heroic muscle behind Theo's bumbling mission.
