The narrator's wife had been living on the West coast with a man she was going to marry, and found Robert's ad seeking someone to read to him. Robert made a profound impact on her. After she left her job the two had been exchanging audio-tapes for ten years.  After a painful divorce she had showed the narrator the tapes which seemed to bring them closer together and they eventually married. They end up getting stoned (marijuana) and watching a tv show on cathedrals. The narrator asks Robert if he has ever seen one. Robert says he has not. The scene leads to the narrator drawing a cathedral while Robert touches the narrator's drawing hand.
