Why was buck neither a house dog nor a kennel dog?

Buck is not a "kept" dog. He enjoys a lot of freedom on the Judge's estate yet is still domesticated. Buck lives as a pet and doesn’t have to work for his keep other than as a companionable playmate for the judge.
