why is bucks challenge of spitz leadership important ?

It is logical that Buck's self-control starts to break when Spitz occupies his sleeping nest. Buck cannot tolerate Spitz's invasion, because to do so would be to signal his total submission to Spitz. It is not a matter of pride, but literally of survival.
