why is buck a thing of the wild even though he is with Thornton?

There is a primal part of Buck that is all wolf bound to no man. This part slowly emerges through the book. Even though Thornton is a good master, Buck still feels a call to the wild, It is a deep longing to join nature on his own terms away from man.
