why does the author end bucks story the way he does and what does it mean?

Buck is finally emancipated from the world of man. Although he respected men like Thornton, his ultimate destiny would be in the call of the wild. Buck would now live on his own instinctual terms and take his place as an alpha-dog in the wild.
