Why couldnt Buck find the other dogs from his team that first night in the snow?

Buck couldn't find the other dogs because they had dug themselves holes under the snow.
Another lesson. So that was the way they did it, eh? Buck confidently selected a spot, and with much fuss and waste effort
proceeded to dig a hole for himself.
