Why and how is control asserted over others,for example by violence by club etc

In Law of the Club, the man in the red sweater consistently beats the dogs into submission to make them ready for their eventual sale. The dogs themselves, resort to violence in order to claim dominance among their pack members. Violence is utilized by both himand and animals as a way to asset control throughout the novel.
