Where did Buck try to sleep on the first night?

Although Buck begins his life in the comfort of the Santa Clara Valley in CA, he is kidnapped and sold and put on the Narwhal (ship) to go to the Yukon. In Chapter 1, he sleeps in the cargo hold; when they dock, he gets off to his first experience with snow.
