What is the main purpose of Chapter 2?

The main purpose of Chapter Two is Buck's necessity to harden himself against all threats without thought to the past. He must learn that fair play is non-existent, and that is he's going to survive, he must unlearn his lessons as a domesticated, well-loved pet and companion.
