Does the end of the story surprise you? Why or why not? How would you have ended the story?

I like that Buck became free and joined the wolves. He had a beautiful life of domesticity until he was taken and beaten and subjugated by unworthy men. To have lost John Thorton, who he came to love would have severed all ties he had to man. It was time to be the free animal he was meant to be.
