Native Americans were forced to change their nomadic lifestyle to homestead farming.

They were put on reservations with poor quality land.

In order to get rations, they had to wear "white man's clothes", attend church, and send their children to government schools. They were not permitted to speak their language at these schools. Children were given Christian names and had to ignore their own aboriginal identities.

This was systematic forced assimilation.
