Why was Bud stung by a wasp?

Bud though he was hitting a bat with a rake..... trying to keep it away from him. What he didn't find out until he was hit by what he described as a "red-hot nail" in his cheek. The bat was actually a hornet's nest..... Bud got more than a few stings for his trouble.
