Brother includes violence, racism, police brutality, sex, swearing, and the brief mention of drugs. Furthermore, it portrays vividly the often bleak reality that can accompany impoverished immigrant life, especially if you're also Black. Teachers should plan to contextualize sensitive, mature, and disturbing topics to mentally prepare students for what they are about to embark on in reading the book.
