Why has Huxley chosen Bernard as one of the main characters, instead of Helmholtz who seems much more like a conventional “hero”?

In my opinion, Huxley chooses Bernard because he is easy to symplathize with. Bernard's fear immobilizes him. He sets aside his indivuality in order to be accepted. Bernard believes that silence and complacency will earn approval.... that these traits will save him from rejection. Sadly, he is wrong.
