Why does John want to "undergo something nobly". Why doesn't Lenina understand?

Lenina has been conditioned to do as she likes..... whatever feels good. John believes in nobility and meaning in life. He doesn't want to have a fling with Lenina, he wants their intimacy to mean something. The fact that it doesn't sickens him and leaves her extremely confused.
