Why does Bernard dislike soma?

Bernard dislikes soma and refuses to take it because he prefers to "be himself. Himself and nasty. Not somebody else, however jolly." Bernard sees no point in artificial happiness..... he finds the experience the drug provides both empty and unsatisfying.
