How does Bernard react to being sent away?

Mustapha Mond tells Helmholtz and Bernard that they will be exiled. Bernard basically begs and pleads for a different punishment. Mon states that Bernard and Helmholtz would probably have been killed were it not for these islands of exile. Although Savage has given Bernard a "new life”, it is curious that Bernard should be so upset given his contempt for society.
